Taking Care of Your Jewellery

While our jewelry was created to last a lifetime, there are some factors that can contribute to the everyday wear and tear of your fine jewellery.

Storing your Jewellery

Because of the high value and rarity of certain jewellery, some people like to store their jewellery in a safe when not in use. If you have individual gemstones, a soft pouch is good for keeping them from coming in contact with other hard surfaces. Store silver jewellery in a cool, dry place, preferably in a soft piece of felt or cloth. Ask one of our sales representatives about getting a jewellery box for all your valued treasures. If you would like to have your jewellery professionally cleaned, bring it in to Sense & Wonder and we will have your jewellery looking shiny and new!

Cleaning Your Jewellery

Be careful using ultrasonic cleaners, as only certain gemstones can handle the ultrasonic vibrations. Diamond cleaners usually contain ammonia and water. Using a soft brush you can remove dust or dirt from under the setting. Silver jewellery can be cleaned with a silver polishing cloth, with or without special silver cleaning solution.

Diamond & Gemstone Cleaning - The Do's and Don'ts

Bridal jewellery, such as engagement rings and wedding bands are typically worn daily, and can appear like they've lost their sparkle if not cleaned on a regular basis. Lotions, oils and other personal care products put a film on precious stones and in the case of certain gemstones can cause damage as well as reduce their shininess or create a "cloudy effect".

We recommend that you avoid wearing diamond jewellery while doing rough work, taking a shower or exercising. Avoid chlorinated pools and hot tubs too and try to avoid touching diamonds with your fingers too much, as smudges can affect a diamond's luster and fire.

General Jewellery Care Advice

Just like your favourite pair of high heels, your jewellery should be the last thing you put on when getting ready and the first hing you take off when you get home.

It is also best to avoid contact with body care products and harsh chemicals including perfumes, hairspray, lotions and household cleaning products.

We recommend that you do not wear your jewellery while sleeping, showering, swimming or during extreme physical activity.

We also recommend removing your jewellery whenever there is a chance it could get scratched or broken ie. working in the garden, moving furniture, going to the gym etc.

Following these easy steps will ensure your jewellery stays beautiful for many years to come.
