The Differences Between Natural and Lab-Created Diamonds.
Which diamond is real?!
What are the differences between natural and lab created diamonds?
In 2018 the Federal Trade Commission recognized lab diamonds as real! What does this mean? Let's get into it, what are the main differences and similarities between a naturally mined diamond and a man made lab created diamond?
1) The origin:
Natural diamonds are formed deep in the earths surface under extreme pressure and heat, and are mined by humans at several diamond mines around the world.
Lab grown diamonds use a diamond seed (a small extract from a natural diamond) in one of two processes, HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature) or CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition). Each process is designed to mimic the natural environment that a natural diamond is formed in. 2) Time:
Natural diamonds take millions of years to form within the earths surface. Lab grown diamonds take between 3-4 weeks to form.
3) The Price:
Lab grown diamonds are more affordable than natural diamonds by more than 30%. It is worth noting that natural diamonds currently hold a greater value in part due to their origin history and the stigma still surrounding lab-grown diamonds.
And what makes them similar?
1) The Chemical Make Up:
Both Natural and Lab Grown Diamonds are constructed with 100% carbon atoms (C) with the same hardness rating on Mohs Scale (10/10) and same crystal lattice structure. This was a key factor in the certification of lab-grown diamonds as "real diamonds". Despite their different origins, the chemical make up is identical.
2) Physical Features:
Once a lab grown diamond is formed, it is set, cut, and polished just like a natural diamond, leaving both with identical beauty and clarity. The only way to spot the difference is by specialist lab testing by a qualified and highly trained gemologist.
It's pretty clear after looking at the differences and similarities that a diamond is a diamond, regardless of its origin.
